For this weeks theme I want to ask, “Who are you here to serve?” .
The truth is I invested a lot of my years trying to serve those who have more position, title, wealth, and authority than me because I wanted something from them. I wanted their attention, their affirmation and their approval.
Over the past few years, I have been healing from this desire to serve and please externally “successful” people. Their blessing is not what I need. In fact, there is a far greater blessing I am discovering as I grow and mature.
Over the past couple months in my new role as the Director of Outreach at 12Stone, I have been gaining a clearer picture of who I exist to serve – those who have less than me.
As a very amateur poet, I found a poem waiting in my soul concerning this idea of who I exist to serve and I wanted to share it with you to begin this weeks theme on serving others:
We don’t exist for those with too much
We are here for those with too little
But seeking and striving for the formers attention
Away with our heart it doth whittle
For the globe is ablaze with the driving progression
And we’re blind to it’s consuming fire
But stop for a moment to gain new perspective
With the world in a new way conspire
Be wise as a serpent and harmless as doves
Great wisdom still calls to the deep
Think and grow richer in who you become
Please awake from you stupor and sleep
For there’s one chance you get to find this true life
There’s no time to cease the persist
For the fate of society hangs in the balance
Of you serving true ways to exist
