“People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:7
It took me over 35 years to really grow up because I had been focusing on the wrong areas of growth. I was trying to stop doing bad things: the symptoms at the surface. I bought into the cultural and often church lie that I just needed to work and try harder to not lust, not be angry, not be unforgiving and quite frankly, it got me nowhere!
I was told: “Just don’t look at naked women on a computer screen” or “Just don’t get angry when your wife does something to frustrate you” or “Just stop eating bad things and eat good things” and the list could go on and on. I was being taught symptom management and symptom management is not a very good philosophy for actual healing. I could work really hard at not doing something for a while until I got disappointed, frustrated or angry and I would find myself right back hanging out with my old friends: lust, self pity, lying, etc…
You see, no doctor ever solely treats a symptom. A doctor is always reading the symptoms to figure out the underlying cause because when you figure that out, you have a chance at true healing! The same is true for our personal development. When we invest our energy in will power to stop doing something we completely miss the point and end up discouraged and frustrated because it never works! God didn’t design the healing journey to work this way. In fact, God wants to get beneath the symptoms at the surface to the heart of the issue -the underlying cause.
When we finally stop trying harder and decide to give up and allow God and the help of others in community and counseling to uncover the underlying cause of our symptoms, you would be amazed at the healing that can take place and lead to peace, rest and freedom. This is the way to true life and tomorrow I will share more about the underlying causes and what is necessary to heal and help us truly grow up and mature!
