In many ways we have come to think about pursuing our passion as the holy grail of contentment, fulfillment and living into a meaningful life. Although there is much truth to this, there is also a subtle lie we need to understand.
The passions in our heart were given to us as gifts and good things to pursue. The lie comes when we start to believe that the pursuit of our passions will always bring us bliss, comfort, ease, etc… This is simply not true.
You see the word “Passion” has it’s roots in the Latin word pati which means to suffer or endure. This means that at the root of passion is suffering. Not what we often think about when we think about the grand idea of pursuing our passion, is it?! Yet, it’s true.
Ask anyone who has truly pursued their passion in life and you will find that suffering and struggle are always a big part of the journey. I don’t share this to discourage you, rather to encourage you and let you know you are not alone! Anyone who makes a commitment to pursue their passion will find a mix of good and bad.
Jesus said that the narrow road is really difficult and there are few willing to go through the suffering to take it, but it ultimately leads to the life and fulfillment we are searching for so it is really worth the journey to get there!
If you are pursuing your passions, you will have some real days of suffering, but those days will lead you toward true life, hope and freedom so it’s worth it and so are you!
